Further map updates…

Hey everyone, so I haven’t updated in a while….mainly because I was in France for a bit of a vacation….but things are back on track now and moving forward! Normally I post updates on Friday nights, but I figured I’d post this one a bit early since many of you are waiting very patiently to see some progress.

The procedural city layout system is basically done at this point. Since the last update several things have happened:

  • the perimeter of each city is no longer totally square. There are now many islands (which you’ll eventually be able to travel to…hint hint) and bays to create some extra variety in the overall shape of each city
  • about 40 new map tiles have been added….everything from dusty streets to backyard swimming pools to graveyards to basketball courts to football fields, to machine gun posts, etc etc….
  • the main city ‘zones’ have been better defined. Industrial zones are dusty and dirty, commercial zones are mostly concrete, residential zones are grassy, and destruction zones are charred and full of rubble. This will help the player better orient themselves in the overall scheme of things (ie, if you see that the buildings around you are surrounded by grassy yards, you’ll know you’re in the suburbs, etc)

I think the last thing I’ll be doing to the map layout system is further emphasizing the destruction around the central meteor crater. Right now that area is mostly grassy…I’d like to make it much more charred and desolate. If all goes well I’ll have that done by this Friday…so keep an eye out for that update!

Here is an image showing 4 different maps generated with the new system:

EDIT:

Tweaked the center crater area I mentioned above…now the destruction zone expands further out to the borders of the quarantine fences.

Nice! I’m happy to know that you’re still updating!

Brilliant! Can’t wait to see what’s next, this is honestly one of the games I’m most excited for! Keep up the fantastic work!

Very nice! Looking at those maps makes me wish there was some kind of central canal or river system in place. 😛

Otherwise things are looking groovy dude. I am always impressed with your progress.

By the way, how long would it take to travel (approx) from one end to the other? Just curious. 🙂

    • Tyson Ibele says:

      Hey Geta-Ve,

The map is meant to be maze-like with its criss-crossing rivers and roads so that traveling freely through it is difficult.

There will be a fast-travel subway system run by NPCs eventually put into place though! So once you discover new areas, you’ll be able to quickly travel to them.

The map is a little over 1km x 1km in size….if you could walk end-to-end unobstructed, it would take about 10 minutes.

Is the character able to swim? Or are there boats or helicopters we have not been shown yet? Those little islands on the border of the map have to be accessible somehow? But how? Anyways I hope you had a great time in France, Tyson 🙂

    • Tyson Ibele says:

All the islands will be accessible, yes.

      >Is the character able to swim? Or are there boats?…

      That’s the plan 😀

  6. Gulo says:

Havent post on this blog for a while now.
    the map looks huge!
btw is the greenish part of the map.. is it like an island surrounded by sea or.. a town surrounded by trees or mountains, perhaps?

    loving your work..
    as always, keep it up!

  7. KillerMapper says:

Looking nice. Are bridges planned ?

Hope you enjoyed your vacs in France, maybe I saw you if you went to Paris x)

    • Tyson Ibele says:

Yea, I was in Paris and Versailles.

As for bridges…if you look close you’ll see there are dozens and dozens of bridges. Paved, broken, wood, etc. I’ll show these in further detail in future updates when I post a 3d fly through of a city.

    Nice, Very nice

  9. Phredd says:

How many things would you say have to be done before Zombox is released? A kind of checklist mabye?

  10. Anonymous says:

    you done well!!!

  11. Maxwell218 says:

Kewl, no more square 😀 – You went to France :O Bonjour!

  12. Anonymous says:

You never cease to surprise me Tyson. Love the game, keep up the good work. 🙂

  13. Christopher says:

seriously this looks fantastic, more and more hyped every time I see it. If Zombox is a success (which I pray it is for all the hard work and talent put into this game) would you think of adding it into next year’s xbox Summer of Arcade? Or any port for Playstation or xbox? It would be a great addition for Sony/microsoft’s indie categories.

Will I be able to play this on my pc?

  15. Bparker says:

I think I’ll do a plot post about this awesome news soon 🙂 Keep up the great work.

  16. xwolfhunter says:

Just curious – only the “main island” will have the meteor strike zone/thing, right? It would be weird to see every single island you go to have a meteor strike right in the middle of it.

  17. Jack says:

That’s some brilliant work there, the system appears for more natural now. Are the islands themselves going to be ‘infected’. Or will it be WWZ style where Zeds tend to just… Wander into the water, and wash up on foreign shores?

  18. Fadi98n says:

Hey Tyson can you please tell me what font you use for Zombox if that’s possible

  19. Johnster says:

I like the idea of collecting stuff like scarp but could you place it
Because making house on a island would be awsome and a epic base would be nice to make and baricades for protecting would also be cool

    • petergurki says:

That’s already implemented. Just read some of the older blogposts 🙂 And by older i mean really old. Like 1-1,5 years ago. Also Tyson, I would really enjoy a feature that let’s you drop certain items like weapons, tools, food etc. on the floor like in skyrim . I guess it would be very hard to program and I think the calculating power of an iPhone 4 wouldn’t be enough. The objects you drop would have to collide with all the objects which is of course very demanding. Maybe you could implement such a feature in the pc version 🙂

Can I play it on my pc

  21. Fez says:

It might be worth releasing a “demo” at some point, at least giving a demo to some game review peeps. There’s some good channels on YouTube who review games, and they have a fair amount of subscribers! 🙂 It’d be good to get this game known to more people.

  22. Borristheviking says:

This game looks so cool!! But Tyson (your Probs getting annoyed from people asking so much but) Do you have a idea of when it can be released?

  23. Johnster says:

He said you might be able to play on pc but it designed for ios and maybe android 😀

  24. Nathan says:

    YEAH!

  25. jrocks3333 says:

I just recommended this game to a lot of people 🙂 hope it helps for sales and interests

    • Tyson Ibele says:

Hey Henning! Nice to see you here. I still remember that BlackJack commercial you worked on years ago, as it’s some of the best damn hand animation I had ever seen. And a quick jaunt over to your site now reveals that you’re still doing a lot of crazy work! Awesome!
